Overview of the Peformance of Governors in Nigeria and their soon to be successors Part 1
In transition into leadership
positions of both political organizations, entities or companies worldwide,
there is a perceived belief that when an individual in a top position or a
leader is about to serve out his tenure, he grooms or at least presents one
whom he has confidence in and believes that that would adequately take over
from him. If it is in a situation where the leader has to be voted in, then the
perception of how the outgoing leader has fared largely determines if the
propped up replacement deserves to get the seat despite whatever shortcomings
the replacement possesses.
In Nigeria, at the moment, what is in most people’s lips is 2015 election and zooming into the states, a lot of governors are completing their full eighth year tenure. Expected 'anointing' and 'endorsements' would soon become prevalent in the polity for the electorate to vote for.
Some states are going to be lightly looked into to view the scenario with respect to the perception the electorate have for the outgoing leader and chances of the supposed 'anointed' candidate.

Abia
State
Theordore Orji who was anointed by
the then outgoing governor of the state, Orji Uzor kalu has not lived up to the
expectations of the Ex Governor. Recently speaking during an interview with
Channels Television, Kalu, said he fell out with T.A Orji, who is the current
governor of Abia, because he cautioned him (Orji) privately about excesses of
his government barely 18 months into his first term.
Kalu said infrastructural developments in the state were grounded in spite of the fact the governor was running the state with multiple loans from banks.
He said, “The time I made that decision (to make Orji governor) it was a right decision. Eighteen months after he became governor, I called him privately and told him ‘look, you can no longer do this job.’ If the governor is an honest man he will tell you this is true.”

Based
on the poor performance of the then Governor of the state Orji Kalu, can one say
he had moral right to anoint a successor for Abia people? Considering his
performance during the 8years of his tenure? Yes, he earned the title of ‘the
action’ Governor, but at the point when he was exiting the government, Abia
state wasn’t in an improved state. I stand to be corrected!.
Governor Theordore Orji seems to elicit sharp reactions from Abia state indigenes and residents. The only widely acknowledged performance by the T.A Administration so far was restoring security and assisting the Federal government to destroy the kidnappers’ den in Abia state. This we acknowledge as a big fit, howbeit that no nation can prosper in uncertainty, fear and chaos. But is that all there is to Governance? Umuahia is still a glorified village, Aba city which is supposed to be the hub of commercial activities in south east is so rotten and decaying! No wonder Chief Arthur Eze described Abia state as a ‘stink’ state!
A quick look at the happenings in
the state depicts a state in dire need of infrastructure .Feelers from the
average masses in the state is that the governor did not do much to uplift the
infrastructural and living conditions of his people. There is a funny rumor
going on that if the governor 'anoints' a person as his successor and a goat is
presented as the alternative, majority of the people would rather go for the
goat.
Laughable as the comparison might sound, a trip to a city in the state that is supposed to be the cynosure of eyes in the south east tells the whole story. Aba is the city.

“Quod
non habes dare non potes”; you can’t
give what you dont have” again does T.A Orji have any moral right to anoint a
candidate for Abians? What giant shoes will he leave for his successor? Whoever
that is going to succeed him is not going to fall from the sky, am sure it’s
someone that knows all the intrigue and doings of the Governor, would he
perform any better?
Abians shine una eyes and wake up
from this deep sleep!!
Enugu State
Governor Sullivan Chime believes that he has transformed Enugu State and he think 2015 is very crucial for Enugu people. He is seen as one of the most media shy governors of his era. He has only been in the news for few alleged scandals, the rumored sex escapades, the widely announced separation from his wife and his subtly handled absence without leave controversy where he went to London for a supposed treatment of an ailment and the Chicken Impeachment of his deputy, which many believed that there was more than meets the eyes in the whole episode. Apart from all these, nothing much is heard of him in the media throughout his tenure which is about to end. However the perception of Enugu residents and indigenes is that he did quite well to uplift the state especially the state capital.
Though, there seems to be some question marks about a seemingly negligence of the rural areas and conditions of some of the public schools and health institutions. Agriculture got a slight boost as exemplified by the San Carlos farm. An 'anointed' successor might not have much issue ascending to the ‘throne’ as it has been rumored that Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has been anointed by the Governor to succeed him, we hope that he will supersede the present governor in terms of infrastructural development and position Enugu State in it appropriate place in Nigeria.

Akwa
Ibom
Governor Godswill Akpabio is a boisterous fellow that enjoys the media limelight, like we remembered, he fought through the cabal, emerging from the minority community in Akwa Ibom state, and got the mantle of leadership, He has also been involved is some controversies throughout his tenure like the '16 is greater than 19' governor’s forum drama. However these do not affect his seeming popularity with his people who feel that he has impacted greatly on their well being throughout his tenure. With the help of huge allocation courtesy of oil revenue and relatively manageable population he has able to impact on both the infrastructure and human capital in the state so much that the stigma the state used to hold as the house help capital has virtually disappeared.
Despite the issue of zoning in the state, the belief seems to be that the electorate would not have much issue with whomever he 'endorses' as his replacement.
