The Olympic Pains: Spare A Thought For These Athletes Whose Bodies Were Broken Along With Their Dreams Of Gold

The Olympic pains: As the Rio Games wind down, spare a thought for these athletes whose bodies were broken along with their dreams of gold

From a gymnast who snapped his leg in half during a landing, to a javelin thrower who dislocated her shoulder in her first competition since a reconstruction, there have been some horrific injuries at the Rio Olympics.

French gymnast Samir Ait Said snapped his leg during a pommel horse landing in the first week of the Rio Olympics

Ilyasov, who was picked to go to the 2004 Athens Games only to be ruled out with a spinal injury, was in obvious distress on the mat before his arm was strapped and he was assisted out of the competition area.

The latest athlete to fall victim of a games-ending injury was Australian wrestler Talgat Ilyaso - who dislocated his elbow during competition on Saturday.

Spectators said the sound of Said snapping his leg could be hear from the crowd

Arguably the most horrific injury from this Olympics occurred early on in the Games, when a French gymnast snapped his leg during a pommel horse landing.

Samir Ait Said's leg snapped as he tried to complete his vault during team preliminaries on Saturday, with the sound of the injury echoing through the arena.

As he crumpled to the floor, Said writhed in agony while medical officials tended to him in front of a shocked crowd.

To make matters worse, Said was then dropped by paramedics as they attempted to stretcher him off the floor.

Last week Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan dislocated his elbow lifting 195kg (429lbs)

The 20-year-old was one of the favourites for the 77kg (169lbs)When he attempted the clean and jerk, his left arm gave way

Last week Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan crashed out of the Olympics in agony as his left elbow gave way during a second attempt to lift 195kg (429lbs).

The 20-year-old was one of the favourites for the 77kg (169lbs) and strode onto the stage with the confidence befitting a European champion and lifted the vast weight onto his broad shoulders.

But when he attempted the clean and jerk, his left arm gave way and he had to take evasive action.

French athlete Yohann Diniz appeared to have defecated himself during the 50 kilometre race this week

He collapsed at one stage during the gruelling event

Diniz eventually finished the race in eighth place

Yohann Diniz, the world record holder in the event, was leading the field in the 45th minute when a camera picked up on him beginning to struggle.

A dark liquid starting trickling down the back of Diniz's legs after he apparently defecated during the race.

Despite the Frenchman's best efforts, he finished outside the medal positions, eventually finishing in eighth place.

However it's not only been the athletes who have suffered injuries at Rio.

Seven spectators - including an 11-year-old girl - were hurt when an overhead television camera crashed to the ground from 65ft in the Olympic Park.

One woman, bleeding from her head as medics arrived, was taken away on a stretcher. The other walked from the scene wearing a neck brace. Five of those injured were hurt by cable - with two hit by the 600kg camera.

Four of those injured were taken to hospital, although none were seriously hurt.
