Man Protest And Recounts Obnoxious Treatment From Electricity Companies In Nigeria ( SEE PHOTOS)

An elderly man was seen this morning in front of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Head Office at Alausa, Ikeja,  Lagos State on a sole protest.

On a closer look, he has placards bearing various messages tagged to his clothes. The summary of the  inscriptions on the placards is a cry for help on behalf  of Nigerians being treated unfairly by the various electricity companies in Nigeria with special attention to Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IEDC).

Baba as referred has been having runnings with them, having been a faithful payee for so many years.

This is his story.

According to him, He woke up one morning and saw that his prepaid meter wasn't working again. He wrote to the authorities at Oke-Ira undertaking office of Ikeja Electric yet nothing was done about it. After several visits to their office,  they came to his house and told him the meter was bad and created a new billing account for him which became an avenue for estimated bills.

Having always been consistent with paying his bills, this septugenerian paid and kept faith hoping that solutions will soon come. One day, there was a surge in voltage that destroyed all the appliances in the house plugged to the sockets. Suddenly, after the Ikeja Electric staff from Ikeja Electric came to fix the fault at the transformer, baba's meter began to work again.

He promptly wrote them again informing them about that and asking them to stop the second account created for him. All these letters were acknowledged yet they didn't act on them.

The last straw that broke the camel's back happened when Baba was away attending to his work and some staff of Ikeja Electric came with a Disconnection Order and two other strange bills one was N74,000 and the other N73,000. His wife explained to them that they use a Prepaid Meter. They saw the Prepaid Meter functioning well yet they proceeded to disconnect his light.

Baba claims the reputation he has built for over 35 years in that neighborhood had been dragged to the mud. All the food in his fridge and freezer got bad because of that disconnection. Today  he submitted his protest letter today at the NERC Alausa Office and Ikeja Electric Headquarters also in Alausa threatening to sue them if N1 million is not paid him in damages within 21 Days of receipt of his letter. He also demanded that a written apology be sent to him from Ikeja Electric.

Baba has done what most Nigerians are shying away from. Must we be suffering and smiling? Will all these injustices continue because some people want to live off the poor? When will the injustices the DISCOS do to their consumers be addressed? Who will address these crazy bills?  Must old men take to the streets? Is it difficult to give all Nigerians Prepaid Meters?

*******

This is one of many stories of ill treatment and poor services from the various electricity company in Nigeria. Same story from North to East to West to South.

Pray tell, why will anyone pay for what they did not consume?  How does this make any sense? Why should these people be allowed to rip-off Nigerians.

Electricity will not be provided yet Nigerians are asked to pay outrageous bills.
Why should they have the monopoly to provide meters?  They are the ones to arbitrarily condemn your meter without any issue.  They come for meter inspection, punch in some code and walla....your meter is Bad!  And before you can breathe in and out, there is an estimated bills of thousands of Naira waiting for you to pay.

I stand to be corrected but I make bold to state categorically that there is sinister approach / plan to place most people on estimated bills just so they can make more money.

Nigerians are so abused that we just allow all manner of injustice to fester and there by it becomes a norm.

Can we all stand behind this old man and demand that the right thing be done.
