Abuja Tremors Explained : Watch Out For Volcanic Eruption In These States.
A tweeter user with the handle @TeresaMckenzy took to tweeter to explain in details what happened in Abuja last week and what might also happens in future.
Read.
About the tremors felt in Abuja last week, seismologists said a small fault line from the Atlantic inwards exists, making Nigeria prone to tremors but not earthquakes.
Abuja, Adamawa, Bauchi, Niger, Plateau and parts of Nassarawa are likely to have Volcanic activities. These states I mentioned have conical hills. Conical hills are shaped like cones. They can be formed from volcanic ash or sediments deposited in water. It's often but not always of volcanic origin. Kerang volcanic hill and Biu plateau to mention a Few.
Biu plateau contains many recently extinct volcanoes. As we know there are 3 types of volcano (Active, Dormant & Extinct). An active volcano is one that has experienced some activity within the last 10,000 years. The problem with this definition is that a volcano may have erupted some 3000 years ago but is unlikely to erupt again in the future. Others suggest that active volcanoes must be currently displaying some sort of activity, and not limited to eruption. This activity could be the release of gases or frequent seismic (earthquake) activity.
A dormant volcano is said to be one that has not erupted in the last 10 000 years but may erupt again in the future. Some believe that a volcano is dormant, rather than extinct, if there is some record of its past activity. Four-Peaked Mountain in Alaska. This volcano was considered to be extinct until 2006, when it began exhibiting signs of activity, and is now classed as dormant. Now that shows that even an extinct volcano like Biu can still erupt.
Lake Nyos (Cameroon) In 1986 killed a lot of people possibly as the result of a landslide, it suddenly emitted a large cloud of CO2, which suffocated 1,746 people and 3,500 livestock in nearby towns and villages. Lake Nyos was inactive for a very long time before the incident.
The lake literally exploded in what's known as a limnic eruption, sending a fountain of water over 300 feet into the air and creating a small tsunami. Hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide burst forth at 60 miles an hour, suffocating people up to 15 miles away.
“I could not speak. I became unconscious. I could not open my mouth because then I smelled something terrible … I heard my daughter snoring in a terrible way, very abnormal... When crossing to my daughter’s bed … I collapsed and fell … I wanted to speak, my breath would not come out ... My daughter was already dead." These are the words of Joseph Nkwain, who on August 21, 1986, survived one of the strangest natural disasters in history. The people of cross river state also suffered from this disaster.
If Lake Nyos should erupt today this states will be affected, Benue, Taraba, Katsina, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Kogi and Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom states. Now what are the precautions being taken to ensure safety if an eruption occurs?
The most dangerous type of volcanic eruption can be triggered by heavy rain fall. Rain seeps in through cracks in the lava dome, water turns to steam, increased pressure triggers a blast and causes a pyroclatic flow. This is just like when you boiling water and it dries up then you add more water you see the steams that come up and then a small blast. You should try it now. 🤗😁
The build-up to an eruption is often easy to see months or years ahead, as magma pushing from below produces a visible dome on the side of the mountain. Small eruptions of lava add to the bulge, making it more unstable until eventually it collapses, releasing the pressure in a massive explosion. But it is extremely difficult to tell exactly when this will happen. I don't want to scare you guys but to make you see that it's very possible for a Volcanic Eruption to happen in Nigeria.
Thanks for coming to my TedTalk. 🤗😁
