"The Beast That Led The Nigerian Basketball Team To Victory; Story Behind The Story (SEE PHOTOS)" this is the caption of this piece, why because the Story is worth sharing and this story should encourage every woman out there doing her thing! Stay on it, with focus and dedication you will come tops!
The author called her wonder woman, but I called her the beast! In a male dominated field, she came tops! Well done!
Now, the story is reported by a Twitter user @SportDokita.
“RENA”
(The African Wonder Woman)The Nigerian female basketball team, “D’Tigress” needed a serious rebuild after a difficult 2022.
They were banned by the federal government, which led to them being kicked out of the FIBA World Cup 2022 in Australia.
Their coach, Otis Hughley, resigned, and some of the key players left because of the crisis.
It was all gloom and doom until they appointed a 31-year-old Nigerian woman as the coach.
Rena Wakama, a US based, 31-year-old Nigerian who hails from Rivers State, was appointed as the D’Tigress head coach on June 30th, 2023.
Rena, who is a former basketball player who played for the D’Tigress and played professionally in the Uk, had huge shoes to fill, replacing Otis Hughley.
D’Tigress we’re 3 time consecutive champions in 2017, 2019, and 2021.
And she had barely a month to prepare for Nigeria’s defence of their trophy.
She started by doing an open tryout in Lagos, Abuja, and Chicago, and this didn’t go down well with some of the old players.
Oderah Chidom quit the team citing “lack of professionalism” from the Nigerian Basketball Federation.
She got to work and rebuilt the D’Tigress giving debuts to many and retaining 5 players from the team she took over.
She didn’t have the best of preparations, but it didn’t change a thing as she took to the court as a “Wonder Woman”.
She went to the 2023 Women’s AfroBasket Ball Tournament as the ONLY female coach.
She had everybody’s attention from her fashion sense to her swag and her TACTICAL acumen.
The D’Tigress team she assembled in less than a month was dismantling teams left, right, and centre.
After each win comes the dance, the celebration, and the show of the true Naija Spirit.

They dismantled every team before them before meeting the Senegalese team that was out for revenge for losing to Nigeria in 2019.
Just like the 4 teams that came before them, Rena Wakama led D’Tigress defeated Senegal 84-74 to clinch Nigeria’s 4th Consecutive title, which left Coach Rena in tears.

Yesterday, she became the FIRST FEMALE COACH to win the title, and we’re so proud of her.
I just wish we could learn to give women more opportunities. They’ve proved over time to be more than capable.
Congrats to the D’Tigress.
Congrats to our coach, Rena Wakama.
Congrats to Nigeria. We have something to smile about
Oh wow! She did it! Awesome.
